Do I need to register for GST if I am starting a business in Calgary? +
You're only required to register for GST once your worldwide taxable revenue exceeds CAD 30,000 in any 12-month period (the small supplier threshold). However, voluntary registration is often a good idea before that threshold, particularly if your customers are other businesses (who can claim the GST back) or if you have significant input costs. Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so only the federal 5% GST applies. Read more about

How does Alberta corporate tax differ from other provinces? +
For most small businesses, the first $500,000 of active business income (the small business limit for CCPCs) is taxed at the combined small business rate: 11% in Alberta and BC, 12.2% in Ontario (reducing to 11.2% effective July 1, 2026). Income above $500,000 moves to the general rate: 23% in Alberta, 26.5% in Ontario, and 27% in BC. The Alberta advantage is most visible on income above the small business limit, where Alberta saves 3.5 to 4 percentage points compared to Ontario or BC. Most clients hit the small business rate first, so the difference becomes meaningful only as the business grows past $500,000 in annual active business income.

I'm a Brazilian professional in Calgary. Can you help with both my Brazilian and Canadian taxes? +
We focus on Canadian tax compliance and planning. For Brazilian tax matters, we recommend working with a Brazilian accountant who specializes in cross-border situations. We can coordinate with your Brazilian advisor on items that affect both sides, such as foreign income reporting on your Canadian return.
What's the typical fee structure for accounting services in Calgary? +
Most of our clients are on monthly recurring fees that cover bookkeeping, corporate tax, and ongoing access for tax questions. Pricing depends on the size and complexity of the business. We offer a free 30-minute discovery session before any commitment, where we discuss your situation and provide a clear quote.
I run a Calgary-based business but have clients across Canada. How does GST work? +
GST/HST treatment depends on the place of supply, which determines which provincial rate (or just the federal 5% GST) applies. Selling to BC, Saskatchewan, or Manitoba customers may also bring PST obligations in those provinces. We help businesses with multi-province customers set up the right invoicing rules from day one. When does it make sense to incorporate my Calgary business? +
Incorporation makes sense when revenue justifies the cost of running a corporation: roughly when your business income exceeds what you need to live on, and you can leave money inside the corporation. Alberta's lower corporate tax rate makes this calculus more favorable than in higher-tax provinces. Read more about
tax planning.
I already have an accountant in Calgary. How does switching work? +
Switching is straightforward. We coordinate the transfer of your books, prior-year tax returns, and ongoing CRA correspondence. The best timing is right after your fiscal year-end is filed, but switching mid-year is also possible with a clean cut-off. We handle the communication with your previous accountant during the transition.
Do you work with my specific industry in Calgary? +
We work with service businesses of all kinds. To start, we have specific experience across ten industries: real estate professionals, IT and software, healthcare practitioners, legal practices, beauty and esthetics, immigration services, hospitality services, not-for-profits, martial arts schools, and travel agencies and educational consultants. If your sector isn't on this list, that doesn't mean we can't help. Many patterns translate across service businesses, so it's worth a conversation.
